Do Jang Rules
Do Jang is a term used in Korean martial arts that refers to a formal training hall for students to conduct training, examinations and other related encounters.
Do means "the way" or "path" and Jang means "a place". Which makes Do Jang "the place where one practices the way".
As a sign of respect the one's school, instructors, and fellow students, all students are expected to obey the following rules of conduct:
- Always bow to the flags, instructors, and senior belts before entering and when leaving the class area. Do not leave the class area without permission of the instructor or senior belt.
- If you are late, you must wait at the entrance to the class area and wait to be allowed in by the instructor or senior belt student.
- The following are not tolerated in the Do Jang: gum chewing, smoking, bad language, off color jokes, arguing, eating, shoes, running, and horseplay.
- Uniforms must be kept clean, stain and wrinkle free. Belts must be treated with respect and not placed on the floor. No jewelry or hair decoration is allowed.
- Full sparing gear must be worn to do any sparring unless agreed to by the Master Instructor. Gear consists of: mouth pieces, head, hand, foot pads, chest and groin protection. Groin protection mandatory for males, optional for females.
- Senior students must always set a good example both in and out of class. Senior belts must always be willing to aid younger belts with the consent of the head instructor. Younger belts must always bow to seniors to show proper earned respect.
- Whenever approaching an instructor you must bow first then speak (but never interrupt). Never use your instructors first name. Always address him with his title. When finished thank him and bow.
- Black belts must always be addressed as sir or ma'am when you are talking to them.
- Students may not teach or demonstrate their techniques both in or out of the do jang without the expressed permission of the head instructor. Never do anything to bring disgrace or dishonor to the do jang or Tang Soo Do. Never degrade Tang Soo Do, your do jang, your instructor, or other students. There is good in everything and every one. Strive to find it.
- Students must have the permission to enter any tournament or outside martial art related activity. Any awards must be displayed at the do jang for an agreed upon time.
NOTE: Students that do not follow these rules may be reduced in rank at the discretion of the head instructor. Suspension or expulsion may also occur.
